Slim Drill

A slim drill is a compact pneumatic down-the-hole drilling unit used in marble and granite quarries to bore the lead holes that diamond wire is threaded through. The Vikay VKPSD drills 85 to 130 mm diameter holes up to 40 metres, vertically and horizontally.

Dimension-stone quarrying depends on two intersecting holes meeting accurately, because the diamond wire has to be threaded from one to the other. That makes hole straightness, not penetration rate, the governing requirement, which is why the DTH method is used and why the rig is built slim enough to set up tight against a face.

The VKPSD drills 85 mm to 130 mm diameter, to 40 metres depth, in vertical and horizontal orientations. It dismantles into sub-assemblies, so it can be carried and rigged on benches that a tracked machine cannot reach.

Applications are marble and granite quarrying, dimension stone extraction and any duty where a long, straight, small-diameter hole is required. DTH hammers and bits to suit are listed under Mining Equipment Accessories.

FAQS

What is a slim drill used for?
- Drilling the vertical and horizontal lead holes in marble and granite quarries that diamond wire saws are threaded through, and other long small-diameter drilling.

What hole diameter and depth can it drill?
- 85 mm to 130 mm diameter, up to 40 metres deep, in both vertical and horizontal positions.

Why is the down-the-hole method used for dimension stone?
- Because the two holes have to meet. With the hammer at the bottom of the hole there is no energy loss or deflection through rod joints, so the hole stays straight over long depths.
