Backfill Tamper
A backfill tamper is a hand-held pneumatic rammer used to compact backfill in trenches and around foundations, pipes and services. Vikay supplies tampers from India in the classes corresponding to Atlas Copco TAM 14 and TAM 19 and Chicago Pneumatic CP 0003 and CP 0004.
Compaction failure in a trench shows up later as settlement in the road above it, which is why backfill has to be compacted in layers rather than simply pushed back in. In a narrow trench or against a wall a plate compactor cannot reach the material that matters, and a hand-held tamper is the only practical tool.
Typical duties are trench backfill in lifts, compaction around pipes, ducts and manholes, working against foundation walls and abutments, and confined compaction near existing services where vibration must be controlled.
The range corresponds to the Atlas Copco TAM 14 and TAM 19 and the Chicago Pneumatic CP 0003 and CP 0004, with the Vikay VK 003 and VK 004 built to interchange with the CP classes.
